COTÉLAC means side of the lake and it is there in Nantua, France between Lyon and Geneva where Cotélac started in 1993. Since then it has grown to 110 stores throughout the world. In the U.S. one can be found in Boston, Chicago and soon Pacific Heights, San Francisco. But it is here in Soho, at 92/94 Greene Street where I met with Catherine the U.S. marketing manager.
Cotélac in Soho is a beautiful, white, airy duplex designed by the owner’s brother. On the lower level you’ll find menswears and Acoté, the little sister line which is a bit younger with a slightly lower pricepoint. Catherine describes Cotélac as feminine and subtly sexy. The look is designer and many of her customers, some as far away as Denver compare the line to Marni. In some branded stores it is opening pricepoint while in others it is considered highend. Most of the fabrics are French or Italian and all special treatments such as crinkling and pleating are done at the factory in Nantua.
The men’s line is only four years old. Catherine defines her male customer as “hip”. I find it very straightforward. It’s for the guy who wants great styling, comfortable fabrics and standout details.
